Accessibility is determined
by how barrier-free technology is to persons with disabilities and
how easy it is for a person with a disability to use an application
or service.
Section 508 is a part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 which requires that electronic and information technology developed, procured, maintained, or used by the Federal government must be accessible to people with disabilities. Section 508 was originally added to the Rehabilitation Act in 1986; the 1998 amendments significantly expand and strengthen the technology access requirements in Section 508.
Section 508 is a Federal ruling on Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Standards that went into effect on 21 Dec 2000. These are mandatory guidelines aimed at making information technology, including both Web and non-Web applications, developed, procured, maintained or used by Federal Agencies, accessible to people with disabilities. Federal Web sites and property are affected by the guidelines, which were devised by the interagency U.S. Access Board. They took effect June 21, 2001.
WRSystems' compliance with Section 508
WRSystems' software engineering processes include accessible design compliant requirements, not only with Section 508 standards, but also, if involving a Web-based application, with the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) 16 Priority 1 checkpoints, as described in its "Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0." Non Web-based applications are required to be compliant with Section 508's requirements in Subpart B - Technical Standards 1194.21.
WRSystems has developed its own in-house Web Accessibility Design Standards user guide, which is followed by all Web design and development projects. The standards address all of the section 508 requirements for Web design (16 rules) - Subpart B - Technical Standards 1194.22 in addition to the 16 Priority 1 checkpoints from the W3C "Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0."
In-house training on Section 508 standards, accessibility, and WRSystems' Web development standards was delivered company-wide.
WRSystems' software development and quality assurance personnel are skilled and experienced in testing for Section 508 compliance and use a variety of tools including JAWS and BOBBY.
