Polishing Cloths

photo of polishing clothsToday's technology offers the fiber optic installer many connectorization and polishing options. Recent advances in abrasive technology have allowed Innovative Fiber Technologies to develop the next generation of abrasives for fiber optics. APC 100 Series abrasive polishing cloth delivers superior polishes with virtually no loss while reducing glass breakage, resulting in greater connector yield, higher connector performance, reduced material costs, and reduced labor costs. The abrasive polishing cloth works so well that even a novice installer can achieve professional results.

enlarged photo showing layers of IFT's polishing cloth Traditional fiber optic connector polishing films consist of a hard crystal fixed to a Mylar backing. During the polishing process various grit Mylar films placed over a soft rubber pad are used to remove epoxy, polish the optical fiber, and shape the end of the connector for minimum loss and minimum back reflection.

Unlike fixed abrasive technology products, Innovative Fiber Technologies bonds the abrasive to a flexible cloth backing with a thin layer of specially formulated latex. The thin cushioning latex layer is engineered to form around the connector tip better than any rubber pad, creating the perfect radius (see photo left) for exacting physical contact (PC) finishes and exceptional polishes. The cushioning layer also allows the abrasives to move during the polishing process which reduces glass breakage and greatly enhances durability, allowing a single sheet of APC 100 Series in a 6” X 6” - 1 microm grit level (APC100-1) configuration to polish up to 15 or more connectors on a single sheet. This typically results in a 67% savings in consumables!

Polishing Pucks

IFT Fiber Optic Polishing Pucks are designed to polish TIA/EIA/568A SC connectors or ST connectors. The polishing puck is manufactured in four versions for wet or dry polishing with a circular or square grip. Pucks Comparison
IFT pucks are larger in diameter and thicker giving more heft to them than typical polishing pucks. The difference feels like the difference between a Liberty Head Silver dollar and a fifty cent piece.
The circular or square grip allow the installer to control the pressure on the tip of the connector by simply squeezing or relaxing their thumb and index finger. The combination of a circular or square grip and larger overall diameter greatly reduces rocking of the puck/connector during polishing. IFT polishing pucks are designed for both the novice installers and the seasoned veterans.
